In the gospel of Matthew, chapter 9, Jesus makes this statement:
...“The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
For a long time, I’ve looked at this passage through the lens of consumer churchianity. Through this lens, the above passage reads this way: “look at all these potential church members! We need more laborers who will recruit these giving units into my church.” I know this is a cartoonish statement, but I think it contains an element of truth regarding the way I viewed the world when I was working inside the church.
Now that I work for SoCe Life, and I’m focused on discovering the gifts of people, I see this passage very differently. As I meet folks in my neighborhood I am amazed at the multitude and variety of gifts that are out there. My new interpretation reads something like this: The harvest of giftedness is plentiful, but the neighbor connectors are few; therefore ask the Lord of Giftedness to send out neighbor connectors into his field of gifts.
I feel good about that prayer!
